Overall I believe that the poster and program were of a much better quality design and production wise, which makes me happy as it shows that I have grown my creative mind and continued to improve my skills.
I believe I spent too much time working on the poster rather than the program, which bothers me a little as I would have preferred to have given them an equal amount of design time.
I really should have come up with more professional looking designs in the draft stages of the poster so I could have had a better choice of quality designs to choose from. This is not to say that I didn't like the final design, which I did like, but I really would have like to have been able to represent all the ideas in some sort of way. I felt that the poster could have had more colour really.
While the program looked on a whole other level to the 'Puss in Boots', there were still mistakes and things I would have liked to be better.
First of all there were two mistakes in the program. On of the cast members was missing from a song. The other mistake was that act two was done in caps lock, "ACT Two", rather than in proper text, "Act Two". Both mistakes could have been avoided if they had been proof read one more time before printing.
If I was going to improve the program it would be the graffiti art by far. The background graffiti was tasteless and amateurish, that it was obvious that it was a rushed job. If I was to re-do the graffiti I would have looked for a more suitable font and used drawings rather than clip art to represent the words and to make it look like a professional street artwork.
Another thing I would have actually changed, would have been to do a different back cover for the program and maybe even the front cover as well. The reason why is because it was a little lazy and rushed on my part, even though it turned out to be a good idea.
In hindsight I would have worked on the program at least one week earlier to have allowed more time for the design process and also allowed the cast and director to have a proper proof read through before approving the program.

Poster and Program Artwork - Week 5
The program design was approved, so I commenced with removing the show details from it, which was a simple task and didn't take long.
My next task was to finish the background for the inside pages. Since the idea of graffiti are and a clip art was approved, I started to use the ideas I had come up with for the poster. For the brick I had to recreate it as it was to be a bigger surface than the poster and made it the same texture. I chose to do the animated wall again, for the same reasons as the poster. I then turned down the opacity of the brick wall to 20%. This was so that the brick wall didn't over shadow the content of the program and to too really feel like it was a background. Once the brick wall was finished I wanted to add some colour to it, with some graffiti writing and a picture to reflect the word. The words I chose were: Love, Peace, Honesty and Rejoice. I chose these words as these were the core values I felt resonated the most in the show.
For the words I used Ariel as the font for the graffiti. This was primarily due to the fact I was running out of time, and I didn't want to waste too much going through hundreds of fonts. For the colours of the words, I played around with the gradient tool. This tool allowed me to make the words as colourful as possible. The gradient combinations I used were: Dark red - light red, Dark blue - royal blue and a rainbow effect. For the pictures I used basic clip arts to reflect the words as much as possible.
Once this was complete I started to fix the amends requested by the director. This time there wasn't too many, mainly due to having spell and grammar checking it before sending it off last week. The only changes were the confirmation of cast and crew roles and the special thanks section.

Poster and Program Artwork - Week 4
The poster that was originally designed was the one chosen for the final poster. Here is the poster:
I was asked to create an online version on this poster. This required me to remove the Godspell title. This was an easy fix and was completed within 30 mins max, and ready for online promotional purposes.
Now knowing that the poster was completed I started on the program. As I had done the 'Puss in Boots' program and that this program was to be printed in the same way, I used the same program as the template. This made the process a whole lot easier as the cast was the same and I already had the appropriate head shots.
I started to write the content initially on a white background as I hadn't figured out what I was going to do with the inside pages in terms of the background.
The content was mostly quite straight forward as the cast and crew were quite similar to the 'Puss in Boots' production, so I just needed to re-arrange the head shots an quotes of Jesus and Judas and remove the character names from the 'Puss in Boots' show.
I also had to do the show song list as it was entirely different to the previous show in terms of how the show was structured. In the end, I listed the songs in running order and included the cast members who sang each song. I was then able to separate the list into act one and act two.
For the social media section I was inspired by the study guide and how they sounded similar to the actions to stay up to date with social media pages. I knew I had to incorporate the social media logos, so the audience knew where they could keep up to date with MTD and Westminster Kingsway. This proved to be a bit of a challenge because I wanted the logos to align vertically and with the text correctly. I also had to include the page names on the other side of the logo, which is where most of the problems arose. Eventually, after I had played around with the settings of the text wraps, I got it to work exactly how I wanted it to.
After trying to decide what to put for the front and back cover, I ended up choosing the main poster for the front cover and the online poster for the back cover. I also decided for the inside pages to use a brick wall with some graffiti, which I had mocked up on one page before I sent that version of the program for approval.
Next weeks task is to finish on the front and back covers by removing the show details and adding the details needed for the program and also moving forward with the inside cover. I will also have to make any amends to the content before sending it for approval for printing.

Poster and Program Artwork - Week 3
As spoken about in the previous post, I decided to go further with the font and I really liked the way the upper case 'G' looked. so I chose to make it my feature item in my poster.
As I still wanted to incorporate the brick wall, I decided to have the brick wall around the 'G'. I initially has to make the brick wall as the background. I made the decision to go with the animated brick wall as the realistic wall posed many problems with creating the right texture and colour. To top it off printing a brick wall with a texture would have been a massive struggle.
I had the idea to have the black background to make the feature 'G' stick out even more. To do this, I created a circle around the 'G" with a diameter for 5-8cm. I then inverted the selection to select the area outside of the circle and changed the colour to black. This left the contents in the circle as a brick wall and the black 'G'.
With the brick layout showing an obvious circle, I used a black spray brush effect to black out the partial bricks and the bricks the sat on the circle line. I even used the spray brush on the 'G' using the brick wall colour, to make it look like it had been spray painted on like street art would be.
The last thing I needed to do before adding the show details was to add the Godspell title. I used the same font used for the 'G' and the same colour I had used for the brick wall. I re-created the circle but added an extra 2-3 cm more to the original circle. I then created the title to fit around the circle. I typed the title in caps lock as the font looked bigger, easier to read and overall better like that.
The last thing I needed to do was to add the show details. This was an easy task as I knew I would have to use a white, sans serif font. I opted for Myriad pro for the font.
I was rather pleased with the end product even though it was a longer process than I originally planned for. However I felt that the single colour made the poster rather plain looking. So I made 4 other versions for approval. The other versions were the same design with different colours used. See below:
My aims for next week is to finalise the poster ready for printing and distribution. I would also like to commence working on the program.

Poster and Program Artwork - Week 2
Continuing with the red brick wall as the background I started to work with the title. I wanted the title to be as colourful as possible, so I decided to have each letter in a different colour. The different colours were also chosen to show diversity which is something I want the audience to recognise with the show and for people to not to misunderstand the show as another performance about the celebration of Christianity.
With that idea I started looking at different graffiti fonts, but many of them were illegible. So I adopted a new approach to use a spray brush tool and write the letters in different drafts. I felt that the words alone left the page a tiny bit empty. This could have been due to the font size or the angle of the title. Nevertheless I tried to fill in the space.
To do this I decided to add people to the poster. I chose to create a silhouette from a group of people jumping for joy. This effect allowed for people to remain anonymous and to also have the effect that the group are easily relate-able to the youth. After doing this design, I immediately didn't like it, as it looked cheesy and I didn't want to give that impression for the show.
While I was completely unhappy with the design as it look cheesy, I did decide that I still wanted to feature the brick wall and I found the font I would like to use as it had a modern Gothic vibe and was a font that wasn't often used.
My aims for next week is to finalise the design and to make it simple and yet modern, and cool.

Poster and Program Artwork - Week 1
My initial idea for the Godspell poster was to create something that looked modern, engaging, but simple.
I was inspired by the street art around London especially around the college. I wanted to create a feeling that the show could speak to the youth of London Kings Cross area and those who aren't necessarily from that area, but who spend a lot of their time there, whether it be from studies or work.
To use this inspiration, I decided to create a poster which featured a graffiti wall. The colour was to be inspired by the stone brick wall around London, but then I realised that the colour was too light, so instead a opted for a red brick wall. I wanted to make it as realistic as possible. For the graffiti writing I wanted it to be as colourful as possible. This was to reflect the colourfulness of London's street art.
Another inspiration came from our production of the show itself. I chose to use the fence effect as a background. I chose the fence as it featured a few times in the show and it was also part of the props that the cast and crew had to build as a company. As the cage was a greyish colour I needed the title to stand out even more, so I needed to add colour to the font.
Out of the two backgrounds I had designed I chose to stick to the brick wall background for two main reasons. The brick wall, allowed to more freedom with colour and it also didn't restrict the show detail in terms of font colour, size and position on the poster. The cage was too restrictive with colour as the tones were mostly greys' and not at all captivating.
The other reason is that the cage gave the wrong impression of the show. It didn't feel welcoming and portrayed that the show was set in a prison. The brick background gave a more inviting feel to audiences.
Next week my goal is to create a design using the brick wall background and find different fonts for the show title.

Artwork Timeline and Plans - Introduction
My plan for the creation and execution for the Godspell poster and program is as follows:
Week 1: Brainstorm ideas and finding inspiration from the show at rehearsals, the Broadway productions and other productions of the musical, as well as other modern designs.
Week 2: Create designs to represent the brainstorm ideas. I aim to complete as many designs as possible
Week 3: Continue with week 2's task. This week's task is to narrow poster drafts to 3 versions.
Week 4: Choose elements of the drafts that were completed in week 3 to create the final design.
Week 5: Create final proof of poster for both the printed and online versions. I also want to begin to construct and fill the content of the program.
Week 6: Finalise program, ensure all content has been added and updates and that the front and back covers have been finalised and approved, ready for printing.
